EU Fishing Politics
The European Union has a long reputation for bureaucratic nonsense when it comes to the rules made up in Brussels. The continental inability to foresee unintended consequences, or effects of the decisions is legendary.
Nothing highlights this rule making puzzle more than the policy to commercial fishing in the waters now controlled by many landlocked countries, and others with a history of ignoring rules. Those who have a tradition of adhering to rules, like the United Kingdom are penalized.
The fate of thousands of tons of prime Cod, rapidly becoming an endangered species, is a travesty of common sense and environmental management. With the stocks of fish both coming back, and moving their locations through Global Climate Change the trawlers may find themselves with nets full of prime Cod, Haddock and other scarce and popular fish.
The EU mandates that once the quota is reached the rest of the Cod and other prized delicacies, now dead are dumped overboard to rot and pollute the fishing areas. That is those that aren't grabbed by Seagulls and other fish. Meanwhile the Housewife is looking at empty displays of fish at the Supermarket, or unable to afford the expensive fish on display.
The EU Common Fisheries Policy is an unworkable bureacratic nightmare that neither conserves stock, manages fishing effectively, or encourages investment in fishing.
