Computer Crime

The vulnerability of computers storing critical financial and business data has increased to an all time high as the attacks become more sophisticated and the opportunities multiply exponentially. The acceptance of eCommerce, and the convenience of mobile computing and communication devices linked into networks gives the international criminals a Cornucopia of opportunities. The shoddy operating systems, released for maximum profit instead of reliability have made for lucrative pickings for corporations and individuals alike.

The next war will be fought in Cyberspace first, then when the stronger adversary is crippled then the level playing field gives the advantage to the most aggressive, with the most carefully thought out strategy. Sadly recent military strategies from the United States leave a lot to be desired, especially if a global power is involved instead of struggling bankrupt third world countries. That makes the first move, of crippling the civilian economic structure an essential line of defense, which if lost will result in an unsatisfactory outcome of any military conflict. The team that hacks a corporate network today is probably training to hack a military command and control network at some time in the future.

I will be reposting many of the computer crime and threat papers back to 1996 when ComLinks.com was a pioneer in bringing these crimes to the attention of Congress and visitors.
